Petrochemical industry
The essential move to intelligent camera systems
VCS serves a range of clients in the petrochemical industry, including oil refineries. Reactive camera surveillance is not foolproof. That's why VCS Observation implemented 24/7 smart camera surveillance for several petrochemical companies, partially taking on the job of busy staff.
24/7 smart camera surveillance
Our camera system in an oil refinery is a good example. Using our system, they monitor flame formation (the ‘flares’) on site. The cameras create a visual image for the control room, where operators monitor the process and make adjustments as needed. The system automatically triggers an alarm if the cameras no longer detect the flame (flame detection).
Companies in the petrochemical industry are bound by strict security requirements and are subject to increasingly strict surveillance, in part to nip terrorism in the bud. Camera surveillance is often used in combination with surveillance. But: who continuously reads the images, who can immediately anticipate? Sometimes there is insufficient visibility, due to fog or dark lighting conditions. As a result, this type of camera surveillance becomes reactive.
Thermal and controllable camera
To meet these issues, VCS Observation developed a smarter method, using a combination of thermal cameras and steerable cameras. The thermal camera recognizes an intrusion in the field and in the periphery, the shape of a human, with high-quality video content analysis. And in such a case signals a linked ‘regular’ steerable camera.
Common (-looking) traffic can also be purposefully monitored with camera surveillance, by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) license plate cameras. These cameras detect the vehicle's license plate number and continue to track it. If drivers enter an area of the premises prohibited to them, surveillance immediately receives a targeted notification.
Intelligence is essential
Reactive camera systems are sensitive to terrorism, so the move to intelligent systems is essential. By taking camera surveillance to the next level, fewer personnel are needed: technology largely takes on monitoring and analysis. In addition, the camera images are razor-sharp, both during the day and at night. This provides security: in the event of a break-in, escape is no longer possible.

Mobile camera surveillance
VCS can place a temporary camera with mobile Internet connection at virtually any location. This is extremely effective for timely visualization of acute threats, such as theft or vandalism. They can also be used for extra surveillance and monitoring high-risk objects.

Smart cameras
The 'smart city' has become indispensable in public spaces. The basis for this are smart cameras. It is often thought that these solutions are only available for (large) cities. That is not true. Smart cameras also offer numerous opportunities for companies in the industry.
